How much time do you spend on grooming every day?

If you’re like most men, it’s a lot. One study found more than two thirds (67%) of men aged 16-24 said that it’s important to them to take care of their looks.

But what products should you use? With the market expected to be worth over £46 billion by 2020, you certainly won’t be lacking in choice!

That’s where I come in. In this blog post, I will detail the male grooming products that you should be using every day. Some may surprise you…

Face wash

Keeping your face clean is essential. A lack of a good routine can lead to blocked up pores and eventually, acne.

Using a high-quality face wash is a good start. However, you will need to pick the right one for your skin:

  • Oily skin – Look for products that help to regulate oil production, without leaving your face feeling dry.
  • Sensitive skin – Skin prone to irritation? Look for natural ingredients that sooth such as aloe vera, chamomile and marshmallow extract.
  • Dry skin – Flaky and itchy skin is a common issue. Look for a product that re-hydrates to breath new life into your skin.
  • Normal skin – If you’re lucky enough to have relatively normal skin, I would simply opt for products that contain only the most natural ingredients.

Eye cream

Your eyes go through a lot.

Staring at computer screens and late nights can have a detrimental impact on their appearance.

This constant strain and the resulting fatigue can lead to crow’s feet and unwanted fine lines, as the skin around the eyes is much thinner than the rest of the face.

But there are products that can help. One that I have discovered recently is this award winning eye cream from MMUK Man.

Every time I apply it, my eyes feel refreshed almost straight away and although noticeable skin regeneration is only expected after 3-4 weeks, the early signs are promising.

Beard oil

You just knew I was going to include a beard product.

There are so many I could have included in this list. In the end, I have gone for the most important one in my opinion – beard oil.

Not only does it keep your beard hair feeling and looking healthy, it also plays the important role of keeping the skin underneath moisturised, so it doesn’t get itchy.

Unsure what to buy? My recommendation is to look for beard oils that only contain natural ingredients, so no nasty chemicals come into contact with your face and beard.

You also need to consider the scent. Do you like strong or subtle scents? Or would you prefer an unscented beard oil? With so much choice on the market, you’ll be sure to find one you like.

Hair products

Men’s haircuts have certainly evolved over the years.

From quiffs and spikey hair through to man buns and undercuts, a hairstyle is a great way for you to grab attention.

To achieve these looks, you need to use the right products. But with so many on the market, which one should you use?

Here is a quick guide to choosing the right hair product:

  • Pomade – Perfect for those looking to create a slick and neat hair style. For example, a pompadour or slicked back look.
  • Gel – This hardens your hair so is great for keeping it in place. Perfect if you love 90s spikey hair!
  • Wax – Unlike gel, hair wax has less chance of drying out and therefore avoids looking too wet. If you’re looking for a simple, messy look then wax is for you.
  • Sea salt spray – If you want more volume and texture, try sea salt spray. Used with a hairdryer, it can produce some excellent results!

Moisturiser

Bad skin can cause a lot of misery.

Dry skin can be sore, while oily skin can make your face appear greasy. Either way, it’s not pleasant.

A lot of the time, these outbreaks happen during busy periods in our lives. Whether it’s a tight deadline at work or a hard night of partying, both can take a toll on your skin.

What you need is a moisturiser that can help your skin recover and give it a little boost. Using a morning after gel such as this one from MMUK man can help.

I have been using it for the past week and my skin certainly feels smoother and fresher. The clear, gel-like consistency does take some getting used too, if you’re used to cream-based moisturisers though.

Lip balm

Sore or dry lips is a common problem, in both summer and winter.

When your lips lose moisture, the skin covering them can become tight and then split.

Wetting your lips with your saliva only makes things worse as this washes the natural grease off the skin.

That’s where lip balm comes in. Once you start using it, you’ll wonder how you’ve lived without it.

I think some guys are put off lip balm because of their fruity scents and the fact that most of them appear to be promoted towards women.

I can understand this. But the fact is, your lips are fully exposed to the elements at all times and do need protecting.

Luckily, there are balms out there that are designed for the male grooming market. So now there is no excuse for not carrying one around in your pocket.

Mud mask

Mud masks are traditionally seen as being predominantly used by women.

They cover their faces with some green or brown gloop and us men look at them, wondering what the hell they’re doing?!

Fortunately, not all mud masks are like that. There are many products that look subtle when applied and are designed specifically for men.

This anti-acne mud mask by MMUK Man is just one example. All you have to do is apply it once a day and leave it for 20 minutes.

Unlike other mud masks, you hardly notice it’s there. I would certainly recommend it if you’re buying your first mask and want to see what it’s like.
